Professional
oral hygiene

Equally important is the professional oral hygiene procedure.

Professional oral hygiene is specialist-performed tooth cleaning using specialised instruments, which removes tartar and plaque that have accumulated on the teeth and cannot be cleaned off with a regular toothbrush. During the visit, individual oral care is explained and the most suitable oral care products are selected according to each patient’s needs.

Tartar forms due to minerals in saliva, the amount of which varies from person to person regardless of individual daily oral care. Delaying and not having professional oral hygiene done regularly only causes more tartar to build up. It accumulates and slides under the gums, causing gum inflammation, bleeding and bone resorption. If left untreated, periodontitis may develop, with the bone resorbing to the point that healthy teeth start to move or even fall out.

By attending professional oral hygiene regularly, you can enjoy not only clean and healthy teeth and gums and fresh breath, but also brighter teeth.

At our clinic, professional oral hygiene is performed using the most modern equipment and magnifying optics, which allows us to notice even the smallest impurities in hard-to-reach areas. This ensures the precision of the procedure and the highest quality.

Procedure steps:

  1. Although the procedure is usually not painful, anaesthesia is applied if the teeth are very sensitive.
  2. Tartar is removed from the tooth surface using an ultrasonic scaler or hand instruments.
  3. Pigmented plaque is removed using the „Air-Flow“ soda-jet system.
  4. Interdental spaces are cleaned with dental floss or interdental brushes.
  5. The surface of all teeth is polished with a special brush and polishing paste.

Recommendations before the procedure:

  1. Arrive after eating, so less saliva is produced.
  2. Come with brushed teeth, so the oral care specialist can objectively assess your oral hygiene skills.
  3. Have a panoramic X-ray (bring it with you if you have one).

F. A. Q.

How often should professional oral hygiene be done?

The frequency is individual and depends on how quickly tartar builds up: it is standardly recommended at least once a year. If tartar accumulates faster, the dental hygienist should be visited every 3–6 months.

Is the procedure painful?

In most cases the procedure is not painful, but anaesthesia is possible in cases of particularly sensitive teeth in order to reduce discomfort.

How long does the procedure take?

Visit duration: from 20 minutes up to 1 hour, depending on the condition of the mouth and the amount of tartar and plaque. If the procedure cannot be fully completed within a 1-hour visit, an additional appointment is scheduled to complete the oral hygiene.

What are the recommendations after the procedure?

After professional oral hygiene, avoid staining products for the next 24 hours (coffee, black or green tea, juices, pomegranates, carrots, beetroot, blueberries, etc.).

What sensations are possible after the procedure?

Temporary tooth sensitivity may occur, as well as a sense of new gaps between the teeth. The tongue gets used to the tartar between the teeth, so once it is removed it often feels as if there are new or larger gaps between the teeth.

From what age can the procedure be performed?

Professional oral hygiene can be performed once the first tartar has formed. There are no age restrictions for the procedure.
